New Leaf is a cooperative learning community that meets Wednesday mornings in the parks and wild spaces of the greater Charlotte area. Our aim is to encourage young children and their families to connect with nature and their sense of wonder through stories, songs, exploration, and play.
We welcome you to join us as we share our time, knowledge, and resources to create thoughtful gatherings and teachable moments.

what does a morning
with New Leaf
look like?
Your children tumble out of the car, excited to greet friends already gathering at the trailhead playground. A rambunctious group of toddlers and preschoolers are joined by their parents and caregivers for a laidback morning of exploring the outdoors. After a few minutes of conversation and play, one of the parents invites everyone to come together for a simple welcome song. They introduce the day's topic by reading a beautiful picture book that holds attention with simple but engaging language. Sometimes there is a simple activity or craft that invites children to engage with their natural surroundings. Some children participate enthusiastically, while others continue to tumble in the grass. Everyone is welcome to take part according to their needs.
After some guidance on what to observe, along with a few safety reminders, everyone starts on a short hike or time of exploration. The children shout and race ahead on the wooded path, stopping once in a while to examine bugs or mushrooms, feel the plush softness of moss, or challenge one another to jump across a log or stream. Parents with babies take up the rear, and are ready to gently call attention to signs of the season. Later, there is a chance to enjoy a snack and free play.
The midweek slump has been replaced by the refreshment of nature and fellowship. You've already made plans to meet up for a casual playdate and a parent's night out.
